Workbench

Work bench is known as a piece of table, which wood workers use for holding the wooden materials at work. In fact, wooden work cannot be carried out on a floor because of operational difficulties. Most of the woodwork is carried out with workers doing the work in a standing posture. In such conditions, work bench comes in handy for carrying out the work very easily.

Another advantage of the work bench is with its large size multiple workers can work on it simultaneously.  Hardware is referred to those metal parts and fittings, which are used in the making of wooden articles. Work bench and hardware are a setup in which the requirements for doing the wood work are easily met. In other words, the combination of a work bench and hardware help the workers to easily manage the work with work setup and necessary tools.

Work bench for woodworking

In carpentry, a work bench for woodworking is an essential requirement. There are many types of work benches depending upon the wooden activity. But all have two main features in common. One is their sturdiness and the other one is the method involved in holding the wooden piece in tact so that the work on it is easily done. The rigidness of the work bench is to make the thing heavy for holding the entire set up without any movement while the work is going on.

There may be different set-ups in the work bench to hold the wooden log/board/piece. However, the main feature is the way the working piece is held in tact so that it can be worked on without any disturbance.

The different types of holding the wooden piece on the work bench are planning stop, hold fast, vises like leg vise, shoulder vise, hybrid vise, quick action vises, pattern maker’s vise, twin-screw vise etc. As analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the type of holding will be beyond the ambit of this write up, it is suffice  to say that these holdings will vary depending upon the nature of  the work being done.

Making of work benches:

Work benches are normally made of expensive and solid hard wood for obvious reasons. Plywood, Masonite and hard board can also be used in making work benches for cost reduction purpose. However, those benches are not so strong and long lasting as those made of hard wood.

Apart from wood, other materials like steel, stone and metals are also used in making of work benches. The utility of any work bench depends upon its size and position from the floor. Normally it is positioned in such a way that it is most comfortable for the workers to work.

Hardware for woodworking

While the modern day hardware is meant to be something different from wood and wooden work, historically hardware for woodworking is meant to be the items that are used  in making wooden particles or wooden furniture.

These hardware items are helpful in cutting, joining and assembling wooden pieces to make them into useful products. Because they are very essential in the woodwork, the joint setup of work bench and hardware has not only become very successful but also has come in handy for the wood workers.

Apart from this, there are wood working hand tools, which are basic paraphernalia for woodworking. They are very simple and can be easily handled by the users. Some of the wood working hand tools are claw hammer, speed square, retractable tape measure, utility knife, chisels, levels, screwdrivers, sliding bevel, nail sets etc. One would have come across some of them if not all of them in one’s life at some point in time.

Work benches are part of a working culture and will keep on changing depending upon the time and need.
